The saliva test is done via Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) which is the current gold standard method for detecting the virus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19. This saliva test has already been used by the NHS.
The saliva test can be sent directly to your home or office and you will not need to have contact with anyone else while you perform the test. The test can then be couriered directly to the laboratory.
For the saliva test, you will just need to spit into a special test tube. The laboratories used to analyse the results are all UK accredited. The tests will not detract from NHS testing.

*Please note that COVID-19 is a notifiable disease and a positive test result will be notified to Public Health England.
PCR tests are used to detect the presence of viral RNA, rather than the presence of the body’s immune response, or antibodies. By detecting viral RNA, which will be present in the body before antibodies form or symptoms of the disease are present, the tests can tell whether or not someone has the virus very early on.
Your saliva test kit and instructions are posted directly to you, and there is no need to visit a collection centre.
Mail your sample back to the lab using the prepaid envelope and packaging.
You will be emailed the results once your sample has been analysed by the lab.
